Going Out Vol #12 – Hannah Wants Competition Mixtape

Going Out Vol #12 – Hannah Wants Competition Mixtape

A recent mix i recorded for the Hannah Wants competiton with a load of new records i bought just before xmas exploring the dancefloor sound of the more uk based genre hopping bass music style. I only recorded this one take which never got submitted as i got really ill literally the day after recording it - and it required a youtube vid submission. But nevertheless it's a sound im loving at the moment and features some wicked...
Going Out Vol #11 – Djing At Out To Grass

Going Out Vol #11 – Djing At Out To Grass

A recording of my set at Out To Grass for Phil & Lara's magnificent 10 year anniversary weekend party on sat. I only have half of the 3 hour set due to not starting the recorder early enough & it running out of space, but it does now fit on a cd 🙂 This set was the first time i had used my new s8 & it was so good to be back on a proper mixer again after using the s4 for the last 4 years! I had 5000 of my best house, breaks and techno in 5 playlists after a chat about what they wanted but had no idea about what i was going to play - hoping to be able to be led by the crowd. It felt like a real return to that essence of djing for me & made all the difference! Audience dictated where the set went (which was way more techno based than anticipated), i got to mix up all kinds of breaks, house and techno til 4am, & it's a shared experience i'll never forget. Going Out Vol #10 – Djing at Glastonberry

Going Out Vol #10 – Djing at Glastonberry

Our friends - Dylan and Ruth Berry have an awesome weekend party in the garden In Bristol, called Glastonberry. First time ive been and was honoured to be asked to play. I bought a whole load of new tunes the night before based on a heads up from Nicky Furness about Special Request which led me onto houndstooth label, alongside a load of stuff i bought on Hessle, like Tessella and the like. Kind of sits somewhere in the middle of breaks, techno and jungle, and a sound im really feeling at the mo. Again another one take mix, but i love listening to it, and hope you do too 🙂 Inspired a whole new direction of music making Download the mix...
Going Out Vol #9 – Techno Mix 1

Going Out Vol #9 – Techno Mix 1

Another mixaday practice session - this time playing a whole host of rolling and funky techno. Anyone who likes techno may hopefully love the tunes as much as i do. Techno was where it all really started for me with House Of God on August 5th 1995 at the Que Club in Birmingham and then my weekly shops to Tempest records. Good times. Download the mix...
Going Out Vol #8 – House To Techno To Breaks To Deep Dubstep

Going Out Vol #8 – House To Techno To Breaks To Deep Dubstep

A practice mix which turned out pretty well moving from Bassy House, through Techno, into Breaks and then a tiny bit of Dubstep to Conclude. I've reformatted since, but will endeavour to get the track listing up as there's a host of killer tunes on here. Download the mix...
Going Out Vol #7 (Archive #15) – Fear & Love (Part 1)

Going Out Vol #7 (Archive #15) – Fear & Love (Part 1)

This was my first attempt of putting mixes together in a different way at the start of 2007. Trying out a different kind of music on a much more downtempo tip and putting it together in a more like the old way of making mixtapes but using cubase to lay out stuff instead of cassette. It was the 1st of 3 mr elephant mixes with the view to making a radio show where mr elephant would explore different themes, and place for me to play different styles of music on a more eclectic or downtempo tip. Opened all sorts of doors and still enjoy all the music on it so here it is 🙂 (Oh the amazing artwork is by Aart Tanner who was the Mr Elephant graphic designer) Download the mix...

Going Out Vol #6 (Part 2) – Djing at Tracey & Matt’s Wedding (Hour 2)

I was asked to play a good friend's wedding last year. They wanted Funk, Soul, Electro Swing, Balkan, (which was Hour 1 - http://www.djnarrative.com/going-out-volume-6-matt-traceys-wedding-hour-1/ and House, Techno, Breaks & Drum & Bass in hour 2 with a few requests like the chemical brothers and underworld. My kinda wedding gig and an amazing night with some treasured people. Download the mix...

Dj Narrative – Going Out Vol #4 – Glitch Hop

Dj Narrative – Going Out Vol #4 – Glitch Hop

This newsletter's Going Out Mix is heavily inspired by a recent dig in September which uncovered loads of wicked Glitch Hop and also to provide a more modular approach to these mixes. All of these tracks were shortlisted for my last reviews even though they aren't new releases, and i'm loving the breadth and spectrum of the genre so been itching to try a specific mix. I realised recently that making multi genre sets isn't as likely to hit as many peoples radars unless they specifically are looking for that, and that the going out series could be more genre specific while the coming home series could be more genre hopping. As i spend so much time digging for and exploring new music in lots of genres it made sense to try and represent what i would play for the more genre specific gigs. While it wont be exclusively this, e.g even this one goes from 100 bom up to 130 glitchy breaks territory, i think it may help people more easily find what they fancy listening to, and also me to better promote the artists that are featured and my own djing. I've purposely tried to keep them at around 40 mins each so that two can be burned to a cd as wanted to create a modular catalogue of mixes which friends and listeners could arrange into a playlist and build up something that would work as similar to a well programmed event. Like all the past mixes ive also put put the links to the artists soundcloud or buy / download links so that you can follow or support the...
Dj Narrative – Coming Home Vol #4 – The Creative

Dj Narrative – Coming Home Vol #4 – The Creative

The 4th Narrative mix explores a journey of a creative spirit with a soundtrack that features many tracks that have greatly inspired me on the deep drum & bass and jungle tip. I've tried to keep it in line with the rest of the Coming Home series and still keep the dynamics of the Narrative, but it could sit equally in the Going Out section too. The vocals of the tracks are somewhat expressive in terms of my own creative path and so i haven't used any samples aside from a small snippet from the inspiration for the mix from Iran Glass (which i found via this poster below) Like the other 3, ive been more exploring the theme, i guess in quite a broad sense, although there is a very clear narrative, which in my head is quite visual and filmlike with a shifting point of view . I purposely wanted to try and create one more set with just the music and vocals mainly to see if i could, as i've spent the last month creating a system of samples and acapellas to use with the next phase of mixes, and to see if what i'd been working on in terms of my music organisation system worked as well for the Narrative stuff as it did for the multi genre...

Dj Narrative – Coming Home Vol #2 – Fear & Love Part 2

Dj Narrative – Coming Home Vol #2 – Fear & Love Part 2

This month’s mix with Narrative is a kind of sequel to my first fear & love mix back from 2006, focusing much more on the Fear side. As a contrast to last month's Zazen Mix this one is much heavier and draws on influences from Joseph Campbells’s “Heroes Journey” structure. It also features a fighting the shadow sequence taken from my 2nd Project X Presents set where i was fortunate to conduct (i use that term loosely 🙂 a live string quartet in a 3 deck remix (again another term used loosely 🙂 of Rich Batsford‘s Completion track, which we all performed live as the climax of the 1st Project X Presents event back in 2006. Those events have influenced me a great deal 🙂 The tracks, accapellas and samples are all djed live with 4 decks and s4 sample slots, though like the other mixes there’s plenty of preperation and reworking in order to try and create a dj mix journey with narrative. The narrative is pretty strong to me in this one, mainly revolving around a journey through some of the different faces of fear, and with the protaganist battling their own fears and coming to some sort of resolution at the end. I wasn’t sure if this was more for home listening or going out, as the music is much more uptempo (and very fierce at times) but i figured it could be both, and, as i have two live sets for this month’s newsletter i figured best to keep it as part of the home. Dj Narrative – Going Out Vol #1 – Djing at Shambala Festival

To kick off the dancefloor side of the podcast I thought i'd start with my favourite gig of 2011 - 9pm sunday night in the Kamikaze tent at Shambala Festival. To kick off the dancefloor side of the podcast I thought i'd start with my favourite gig of 2011 - 9pm sunday night in the Kamikaze tent at Shambala Festival. I've posted this in different forms before & its been for a little while for dload so i wont waffle about it too much. Like the 1st Coming Home mix this doesnt feature any of the new found turntablism and unlike the Coming Home series - there's no focus whatsoever on narrative, as it was aimed squarely at the festival audience, but im pretty happy with it and seemed like a good one to start with. That said it does get through a fair few of genres, got a really good response so far, and has a few 4 dex & efx moments so hopefully it'll be something you'll enjoy and like to download. It was probably the biggest crowd to date (with whatever the capacity of that huge Kamikaze tent was) and has a load of huuge tunes, samples, acapellas & efx, building up through a host of genres, including breaks, techno, drum & bass & jungle. Starting with Rebel Mc & ending with Congo Natty, (as a nod to the great man's birthday) it also features artists like the Prodigy, Freestylers, & Roni Size. Download the mix - http://www.djnarrative.com/going-out-mix-downloads-page-1/ Tracklisting Eva Lazarus & David Rodrigan - Live at Shambala 2011 intro Rebel MC (Feat Barrington Levy & Tenor Fly) – Tribal Bass Davip & 3d Stas – Jamaican Oldskool Chemical Brothers – Salmon Dance (Acapella) Hedflux – Rhythm...
Archive Vol #20 – Djing at PST for New Years Eve

Archive Vol #20 – Djing at PST for New Years Eve

Last one to finish this first archive and my first gig at the wicked club in Digbeth that is PST for Jibbering Records first New Years Eve Party there in 2010/11. Was going to be a dub based diverse crowd and really wanted to get from hip hop dope beats tempo through to breaks, with a little dubstep then into drum & bass and jungle, all having a dubby kinda vibe. Was my first time taking Traktor s4 out which id bought the month before and it rocked. Such a good gig and while i didnt like the looking at the laptop the freedom of moving between genres was a real step forward - which transcended my linear limits of using cdjs or vinyl. Here is the download - http://www.djnarrative.com/archive-mix-downloads-page-2/ And here's a little footage from the last half of the...
Archive Vol #19 – Djing Rainbow Warehouse for Project X 2 – Journey To Edge of Somewhere

Archive Vol #19 – Djing Rainbow Warehouse for Project X 2 – Journey To Edge of Somewhere

A mix that was showcased at our second Project X Presents event in November 2007, and which was based on the Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey. It was also a set that i reopened the Que Club main room with, and part of it was featured in my first review at Custom Made and opens with another of my first tracks. I got to conduct a string orchestra in the meeting the shadow (heavy dnb section) collaborate with vjs and performance artists and despite speakers cutting out all throughout the performance i learnt so much from this mix and quite a bit changed afterwards. Here is a little bit of footage from the start of my set courtesy of Elin Morgan's handy cam 🙂 Here is the download - http://www.djnarrative.com/archive-mix-downloads-page-2/...
Archive Vol #14 – Djing with Bham Dance Collective at Drop Beats Not Bombs

Archive Vol #14 – Djing with Bham Dance Collective at Drop Beats Not Bombs

Wasn't sure if i wanted to upload this as its all a bit full on, BUT the set and experience itself was something i'll never forget. It was a real pleasure working with Birmingham Dance Collective, where we got a choreographed set together over a number of weeks and it went down really well in a giant warehouse in digbeth as part of DBNB following the mighty Jhest nonetheless. It did also teach me a lot and that i needed to develop a way of djing that transcended the linear nature of cdjs and vinyls, and kick started a move from the heavy breaks i was buying (a lot :). Huge props to Lisa Wetton Dance and Chromatouch visuals who created their magic on the night. Heres a clip i found on youtube taken by someone from the audience - apologies for the sound > Here is the download...
Archive Vol #13 – Djing at Project X Presents 1 – Like Fxck

Archive Vol #13 – Djing at Project X Presents 1 – Like Fxck

Surprised to find this on my hard drive! From July 2006 and our first Project X Presents show 18 months in planning!  Starts with my first remix that i ever played out (A breaks remix of Exodus) which i remember walking out to with the interactive performers after playing Howard Marx Samples with a band on 3 stages! Very exciting and open my eyes to the whole Narrative idea. This mix basically just goes into a load of phat dirty and party breaks but went down really well and changed things for me. Recording isn't great, and it is all just on a big breaks tip - but was a gig and collective i'll never forget. Not least because of the amazing people in the audience. Even my Mom, Dad and Sister were there! A clip from my set A video of the whole event - The website of all the events - www.projectxpresents.com Here is the download...
Archive Vol #12 – A Fantasy Breaks Theme for Galaxy Radio

Archive Vol #12 – A Fantasy Breaks Theme for Galaxy Radio

Going through this archive it is so strange how my least favourite mixes are the ones that have been for radio. I was starting to feel pretty limited by vinyl at this point - just into 2006 - and living in Kings Heath and buying all sorts of breaks. This goes from more phat party & techy style breaks to Nu Skool which i would always build. I was surrounded a lot by really heavy breaks from the artists Dave would book for Rockfall so would be playing more on the phat party style than i would like over those first half of 2006, (and my housemate Olly boon was another inspiration on that front where we'd swap our vinyls - although i think i went a little too much on the nu skool and heavy side after Rockfall so it balanced out ...or maybe didnt 🙂 All good learning and developing as a Dj though and few people have said they enjoyed this mix recently after my partner posted it so thought id include in the archive. 🙂 Here is the download...
