Dj Narrative
I'm interested in exploring Narrative with Djing, Electronic Music & VIsual Production, and this is some of that content on the dj side. I also like to play Handpan, live on a narrowboat, and creating all sorts of Audio & Visual Narrative work as a freelancer artist.
The culmination is the collaborative project Narrative AV, which I'm currently building the platform for, but I have been developing this idea since my 1st performance with other artforms at Project X Presents, which has created a much wider vision for the project, & along with Mr Elephant inspired a new project / event called Deprojection which ran a pilot event in 2019, before covid and is now built as a much larger collaborative platform for release in 2022.
The whole journey has produced a host of techniques and content around Narrative, Djing, Electronic Music Performance, & Visuals, & if any of this sounds of interest, please do drop me a line or just subscribe with your email & i will send you the new content, and you can download what you like.
About
A DJ consistently interested in exploring new approaches, Dj Narrative manages to fuse insightful narratives with seriously impressive dj sets. His mixtapes and performances span a huge range of genres, but all with a distinct overall sound.
With a deep passion for evolving the art-form and an instinctive ability to rock the floor, Marc has totally embraced the digital DJing movement, developing his scratching and controllerism techniques in order to transcend limitations and enable creative expression.
Coined as the “DJ with no barriers who fuses genres seamlessly” and a winner of the Night Times award for best dj, his creativity in djing has seen Marc perform with string quartets, dancers, performance artists, musicians, percussionists & vjs, as well as supporting a long list of big names, with a wide range of residencies.
He also produces electronic music, plays handpan, and has pioneered new Dj approaches of Traktor Stems released through Loop Lounge, with support by Native Instruments, describing it as "Incredible routine demonstrating the power of #stems"
His routines also grabbed the attention of Dj Mag who described them as "closing the gap between live production and DJing" plus recent releases on a range of labels like Beta Birmingham & The Roots Project & an impressive collection of mixtapes comprises of a downtempo and narrative based sitting alongside an impressive dancefloor collection.
Realising the need to define a sound, his sound as a DJ covers 3 distinct areas, Downtempo, Dope and Dancefloor, with Dancefloor being split into the beats and bass music side, and warehouse style house and techno music.
A new chapter with a focus on visuals & narrative is being built for his Narrative AV project so, after an extensive period of work, developing a framework and format called Narrative Samplers, which looks as interesting as his back catalogue.
Dj Narrative Collections
I decided to explore this idea of Djing with Narrative, after 10 years, & around 250 gigs performing as DJ Marc Reck . I'm not sure if the name change was a wise move, but i saw it as a project, which grew into ecompassing different forms of audio, visual & storytelling artforms, and recently evolved into a larger collaborative framework & platform called Narrative AV
Those years of developing the idea were behind the scenes & on the stage. Collaborations with Dancers, Musicians, Visual Artists, Vjs, Performers and storytellers, and exploring all kinds of approaches and technologies have led what it was always intended as AV collaboration
The vision has also been based on the collaboration of audio & visual with narrative ever since the 1st performances at the Que Club & Rainbow Warehouse, (which are somewhere in the archive collection of 20 mixtapes, (which if you are interested to hear, show up when logged into the subscriber page)
The subsequent Dj Narrative backstory collections are what followed mixtape wise, & each house 10 mixtape (5 from the Coming Home (Narrative) & 5 from Going Out (Dancefloor) Collections and are linked below.

Narrative Mixtapes
I imagine most people who visit might DJ site find the mixtapes the most interesting, so i've made all the of the music & tracklistings easily streamable from the collection pages. The two "sides" are Coming Home & Going Out, to reflect the narrative side and the dancefloor side, or indeed coming home from, or going out to, a nightclub.
Most of the Coming Home mixes use genres in relation to samples and acapellas try to explore and convey the narrative, so can be a lot broader than the going out, as they don't fall into a specific sound, but the passion for music & listener is always the main focus, & you can hear any of them from the links below.
Influences
Djs like Coldcut, early Northern Exposure mixes & weekly pilgrmages to the Que Club, all likely sparked the passion in the 90's, but since then got deep into all underground genres, djs, producers, VJs, audio and visual artforms and the constant digging & intereste in the manipulation of sample and vocals, narrative, music & visuals. Also all of the pioneers of related artforms like The Lights Surgeon's Live Cinema, Storytellers, Poets, Scriptwriters, Artists, & collaborations & collectives like Project X Presents, and a daily list of mentors, that i hear on podcasts & interviews all provide endless influence & inspiration.
Mix / Download Pages
The earlier backstory collections can be found in 3 parts with 10 mixtapes per page from the links above, which are are split up into narrative based Coming Home Collections

Coming Home Collection Part 2
& the dancefloor based Going Out Collections

Dj Gigs
I've played over 300 gigs along the way, though slowed down in 2011/2012 to focus on the narrative, music & visual side, moving away from early DJ aspirations, & moving onto a boat and unexpectedely moving from my hometown. Still very much taking gigs here and there, with based on one of the 4 styles i seem to have settled on. Here's a list of some previous ones & some feedback

"Fuckin Awesome Mix Man!! Thanks for posting this! - Breaks Fiend on Fear & Love Mix 2006
“It really is a piece of work Marc.. a journey of contrasting styles and musical vigour that’s perfectly mixed, brilliantly chosen and superbly thought out. The ppl I did play it to, once I got home, agreed – they’ve been privvy so far to a completely different ‘Marc Reck’ and this, as it did me, hit them by storm. But, what a journey, all tied in at the end by that amazing Sigur Ross track which brings the whole ‘music’ experience to a huge close and leaves you somewhat in awe. I listened to it with Jack as we drove thru all weathers down the M54. It isn’t that it “just” makes good driving music, even though the double edge thing was that while physically travelling on one journey I was listening simultaneously to another journey. Jack leant forward at one point and turned up the bass and said “God yes, this is it this is” (to get a reaction out of him is pretty amazing and thats the first time I’ve seen him actually moved by what he was hearing). After that, I must’ve listened to it another 5 times during the course of the weekend.. in all sorts of different states. Its pretty much had the same affect on everyone.. so it can’t be just me reading things into it. Everytime I finished listening to it, someone came into the house asking to play it again. Even Valentino Canziani has never been played in my living room that much and consecutively too. Surly that speaks volumes about its quality. …Your best work yet mate ;)” - Sarah Wilkinson (Graphic Designer/Positive News) on Fear & Love Mix 2006

"As the 5 O’clock finish line got closer and closer, co-curator Marc Reck stepped up to the decks to provide a perfect concluding set, bringing the curtain to a close with the sublime lyrics “daylight come and we wanna go home” echoing around the venue. Music Productions
I've had a few releases on labels like Beta Birmingham, and the roots project and created a couple of free ep's, an album of remixes, and around 50 soundtracks for small community arts films.
I've also created Traktor remix sets for loop lounge, a new scenes format for Traktor stems, and some sample collections. I enjoy all parts of the music production process, and have been developing some newer techniques for working with samples and narrative content in electronic music productions.
I play the handpan (learnt with a panstream and now play a halo), and i practice some spanish guitar and piano, djembe and bongo alongside my scratching and finger drumming, and electronic production setup.
From 2017 i'm working on a totally different sound and style which is inspired by artists like Djrum, Leftfield, Pedestrian, and the deeper sound of Tipper, Amon Tobin and Jon Hopkins. Many others, but i'm aiming for something that sits between the more cinematic, broken beat, & techno, with elements of dub, house, & bass music.
Currently im working on a downtempo remix for a Australian based pianist Rich Batsford, and dancefloor techno track for Birmingham Techno label XE:Techno, and 2 remixes for leamington musicians. So still keeping the two genres of Coming Home and Going Out.
All the new stuff will sound really different i'm anticipating, but here are a few examples of some earlier tracks, plus a video Keith Sharman made, and the forthcoming release on The Roots Project
Handpan Player & Storytelling
So one of the main instruments im learning is the handpan. We learnt on a panstream, and at the start of 2017 had the opportunity for a new 3rd gen Halo.
I work with an exceptional storyteller Pyn Stockman creating the soundtrack to the performances and we've performed in Leamington and Birmingham, since our debut gig in March 2017 at the Stagey Fox. with bookings at the Custard Factory, the Big Slue, & Birchwood Jazz festival. I plan to incorporate the handpan into my own electronic productions in the future, and record jams and post the audio up for other producers to download.

<Dj Tools & Routines
I produce collections for Loop Lounge, to provide royalty free Sample Library and Traktor remix set and Stems collections.
In 2015 i created our first collection which was a set of 4 remix sets and recorded our 1st routine with it, working with no fuss productions.
Later that year we recorded our 2nd video routine using other artists remix sets on the label, which got the attention of Native Instruments, who asked us to record a 3rd video using their new format stems. which i had already been working on.
And at the start of 2016 we launched a new format i'd been developing, which was named STEMS - Scene Series, and created a couple of tutorials and a routine for the label.
I created the samples / parts for the 1st and 3rd videos and for the 2nd all samples were created by the loop lounge producers Emile, Simon Owen.
For the videos i edited the 1st & 2nd, and No Fuss Productions, edited the 3rd, and did all the filming and final colourising for all 3.
You can view the routine videos and Stems Scenes Series overview video on the right and check out the links below to check out any of the packs.
(UPDATE 2022-01-10 - Loop Lounge has sadly just announced it has to close its online doors after 8 years following a change of various aspects with distributors due to covid, so the tools & stems below are no longer available to buy 🙁
