Using Guitar Rig

Guitar rig is a quality effects rig for your guitar. I was pretty amazed by the sound when i heard my housemate rocking out with some of the presets, so here's a few notes i wrote a long the way. Guitar Rig Setup Drop a version of guitar rig into the effects rack of an audio channel. Create a midi channel and send the output to the audio channel. This should then come up with guitar rig meaning you can control. If it doesnt you may have not dropped it on the bottom section (i did this first time round) Guitar connections Guitar is plugged into d i box and which goes into soundcard. You can also plug into amp which is miced up into scard. Both seem to sound similar, so i'll stick with direct route as I'm pleased with sound, and its easy to use. Control with fcb 1010 Open the options in guitar rig, and controller and then midi learn. Again make sure the prefs are set correct. Note that the rig control view shows up in live view e.g 5 & 6 for up and down, and pedal auto assigns. This seems easiest to switch patches, and if you need to change the parameters you can do in the browser screen. Assigning controls is as easy as midi learn. The fcb and ableton is setup like this. Bank 1 of fcb1010 controls guitar rig. Guitar rig is on the audio input channel, but there is a midi channel controlling it. Bank 2 controls the 2 live loopers in ableton. Main button, undo and clear are...

Using the FCB 1010

The FCB 1010 is a 10 pedal midi foot controller from Behringer. Its fully programmable so you can use it with any software. Took me a while to get my head around it, so here's the useful links which helped me. As i mentioned in the guitar rig post there were two great video tutorials which showed you how to program the fcb1010. For some reason they've been taken down by the creator, but this pretty much gives the same information - http://createdigitalnoise.com/viewtopic.php?t=1782 This is also useful for programming the fcb 1010 - http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?t=55557&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 as is this - http://waysidedrive.com/blog2/2009/05/15/how-to-program-a-behringer-midi-foot-controller-fcb1010-for-ableton-live/#content There's also a free graphical pc editor here - https://secure.mtnsys.com/faq-fcb/PCEditorBeta.htm or a paid mac editor here -...

Live Looping

Live looping is a great thing both in and out of the studio. A few of my musical inspirations are ninjas at it, and have inspired me to start getting to grips with it both as a composition layering technique & as a potential performance tool. Beatbox artists like Dub Fx pictured about use loop pedals like the Boss Rc-50 with various efx units & Beardyman uses multiple Kaoss pad 3. I've no beatbox skills but am very interested in how i could use a live looper to record jams on in the studio. There's two bits of kits i use for this - Ableton live looper and the Fcb 1010, and a few issues / solutions i've found thus far. I wanted to be able to pick up my guitar, hit record, overdub & undo layers, and use the recordings in my compositions. Recording / overdubbing etc is pretty straightforward using ableton's live looper and this video shows you how. This video from Nico Luminous takes things slightly deeper And then to take things further there's some really useful ideas from brett with the dobro For live playing this works well & i found this video from Chris Willets really useful too. All great tips but somewhere along the way i was also wondering how i could keep seperate each layer. The answer lies in this video from Tom Cosm (and/or can be done with an live loopers on multiple audio channels) Ableton Looper - Preserving Each Layer Separately Using the IAC Driver from Tom Cosm on Vimeo. ---------------------------------------------------- Regarding the fcb 1010 there are lots of useful...
