Learning modes & Matt Warnock Jazz Guitar Tutorials

Learning modes & Matt Warnock Jazz Guitar Tutorials

I've been doing a lot of courses over the last 12 months and one of the more exotic ones was jazz improvisation. While it was too advanced for my level i did learn a load of stuff that helped me understand and improvise. One of the things was the 7 modes and whilst searching online for more specific information i found this tutorial from Matt Warnock. There are a host of tutorials - many free - for beginners, intermediate and advanced and you can support him and learn more by buying his ebook and various other bits and bobs Also useful in learning modes and scales were these two sites one for guitar - http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2011/10/26/a-practical-guide-to-modes-and-scales/ and one for piano - http://kantsmusictuition.blogspot.co.uk/2007/09/method-of-practising-scales.html...
A couple of guitar courses

A couple of guitar courses

Recently i was thinking id really like to learn to play spanish sounding guitar. I searched for some tutorials on youtube, found a really useful video, and subsequently decided to buy the whole course. Only just started it, but enjoying what im learning so far, so thought id post a couple of links (and the video i watched) below. His spanish guitar course - http://www.spanishguitarlessons.org/ and one of the videos > He also does fingerstyle lessons, which im also quite tempted by. - http://www.fingerstyleguitarlessons.org. I like that he offers a 30 day no quibble money back guarentee, and he seems a pretty good teacher, but dont forget the don of online (free) guitar lessons - Justin Guitar < a course im still working through and very much...
Carry around your guitar tabs in your pocket

Carry around your guitar tabs in your pocket

I've just installed a great little app called Pocket. Its free, cross platform, easy to use and perfect for carrying around web pages you want to read offline. I love playing my guitar and especially learning how to play my favourite songs via the unlimited amount of free guitar tabs online. I started bookmarking the tabs recently with my favourite bookmarking app Diigo so that i didnt need to open my computer each time. Diigo is a great bookmarking applet which allows you to create and share lists, annotate or highlight certain info on webpages with a sticky note and a host of other features all for free. On the android its got an evernote style app called Power Note While its excellent when you've got the net, its slightly less useful when you havent. Although it does have a read later option it takes a few clicks more than something like Pocket. So i tried pocket side by side with Diigo and found that one click to save, one click to view. It also blocks the ads, so the viewing is a lot cleaner. The other thing i've tried is readability, which does the same thing, although im not sure if you can tag in the same way. My choice out of the 3 would still be diigo as its easier to group stuff in lists which with a big library is super useful on a phone. With its tagging, sharing and all the other useful options, Diigo with powernote is the same as having something like evernote for your android, all for free. However the interface and...

Phat phish musical scale calculator

One of the things i always wanted to develop is my ability to work out the scale from a riff id made. On my search i found a great little app from for free which helps you find the scales on your guitar neck -http://cyberflotsam.com/phatphish/ Its free (although blatantly worthy of a donation) but is unfortunatly only available for the windows.  UPDATE - the developer has responded and created a beta web version for everyone else o/ Here is the write up and you can dload it from the links above. Using PhatPhish you see where to find notes on a guitar neck for pretty much any scale you'll ever find yourself wanting to play. There are some neat features, such as: Comprehensive database of scales, split into categories Highlight specific notes from the scale Annotate the notes from the scale Support for any alternative tuning of your choice User-configurable display options, including 12 or 24 fret neck Playback options so you can hear what a scale sounds like, including interactive 'plectrum mode' Now includes 'RiffBuilder' which allows you to build your own patterns from a scale It is distributed as Shareware for the Microsoft Windows operating system. It has no special hardware requirements - if your PC can run Windows then it should be happy enough running PhatPhish. However, if you want to get the most out of the audio side of it, then a good soundcard will be a bonus....

Using Guitar Rig

Guitar rig is a quality effects rig for your guitar. I was pretty amazed by the sound when i heard my housemate rocking out with some of the presets, so here's a few notes i wrote a long the way. Guitar Rig Setup Drop a version of guitar rig into the effects rack of an audio channel. Create a midi channel and send the output to the audio channel. This should then come up with guitar rig meaning you can control. If it doesnt you may have not dropped it on the bottom section (i did this first time round) Guitar connections Guitar is plugged into d i box and which goes into soundcard. You can also plug into amp which is miced up into scard. Both seem to sound similar, so i'll stick with direct route as I'm pleased with sound, and its easy to use. Control with fcb 1010 Open the options in guitar rig, and controller and then midi learn. Again make sure the prefs are set correct. Note that the rig control view shows up in live view e.g 5 & 6 for up and down, and pedal auto assigns. This seems easiest to switch patches, and if you need to change the parameters you can do in the browser screen. Assigning controls is as easy as midi learn. The fcb and ableton is setup like this. Bank 1 of fcb1010 controls guitar rig. Guitar rig is on the audio input channel, but there is a midi channel controlling it. Bank 2 controls the 2 live loopers in ableton. Main button, undo and clear are...
