A great blog here from Resound sharing a few of his favourite videos from mixing and mastering legend Dave Pensado. There's a ton of useful stuff on Dave's website, but resound's overview gives a nice...

I helped to organise a fundraising event recently and one of the djs i booked was Simon Xe:techno Owen - a techno producer, dj, label owner and studio engineer. I became aware of his work through being on a promo list and his tracks are always ones that go straight into the collection, which is a welcome thing. Now he is the mastering engineer for our Loop Lounge project and is producing a remix set collection of his own so i recently asked him if he would be interested in doing a rough master of my tracks in exchange for an evolving feature on this website. As stated in a previous post my approach to making my loop lounge collection was to use parts from an ep of tracks id made. The tracks themselves were intended as practice tracks made in a day way back in september when our boat was getting her hull blacked. When this project came along i decided to revisit them and after some more production work they turned out ok, with the parts contained within them being further produced and then edited to make my first collection. When i was djing a party recently i dropped one of the tracks and realised i need to get them mastered as there was information missing, so i sent them to Simon. In a really short period of time Simon addressed all the issues i'd had with the tracks and even managed to improve one which was an overcompressed file. As they were only intended as practice tracks i hadnt had the best final versions to work with, but nevertheless...

A little over my alloted time for this third practice track, but I wanted to go through the process of mixing and diy mastering to see if i could improve. As expected ive made a load of mistakes and learnt a lot, so i'll attempt to note them down below for future ref. So after the first upload of the track, i wanted to get some dynamic sounds in there, and give the track more movement. I originally had the risers, one shots, and drops as 128s, but i found that it was counter intutive to play them with a pad kontrol, despite what my left brain was telling me. I got much better results by previewing them in the browser and laying them out as normal audio tracks as i needed control over the lengths and warping, and it made it easier to see them in audio for me. The other part of the dynamics was glitchy edits, and again i went through a process of trial and error before finding a way that worked. It needs tweaking as it ended up taking too long for my liking, as using stutter edit is a little counter intutive for me as im more used to editing in audio. As a result i was finding that i was avoiding the stutter edits as it seemed too random, so i started off by making my own banks of presets of stutter edits as starting points. Next i decided to resample each track after it had gone through stutter edit, and then edit the results in audio. I did this by dropping...

Mastering should generally be left to the professionals with it being an art untoitself however there are many things one can learn and develop in order to develop the final art of the production process and here are a few links i seem to have gathered along the way which may help shed some light http://www.waves.com/objects/pdf/general/Update-and-Errata-web.pdf http://www.gearslutz.com/board/mastering-forum/58252-mastering-cubase-sx.html http://www.tweakheadz.com/plugins_for_audio.html Plus here is a great video series from Dubspot on my favourite mastering and producing plugin - Ozone I have a few friends that are highly talented mastering engineers so i wouldn't say these can get similar results but maybe they can help push things forward and please do post your own findings in the...
