About 12 months ago I started on the Reckorder project. A notebook style ad hoc approach to recording my progress with writing music, which stopped a few months later due to server issues and is now moved over as part of the tutorial site. My second track was a remix of stevie wonders classic track superstition. Intended as a learning track by playing in the parts myself with some new instruments I'd bought and my first attempt at ghetto funk.
6 months later the track got picked by Beta Birmingham label head honcho Harley Davies aka Terrorbyte who was putting together the 4th beta birmingham compilation of remixes. Newsletter readers may remember his wicked remix of dead prez bigger than hip hop on betas 3rd compilation, and listeners of mr elephant radio will have heard stuff from the first release, both of which are freely available from those links.
While working on the track I decided to try and write a few more, and came up with an Ozomatli remix. It seemed potentially more in line with what i knew about Beta so I sent that over, got some nice feedback, and here it is, as part of their 4th compilation - Champagne Socialism
There's a host of wicked remixes and reedits on this 12 track compilation and I feel honoured to be included next to some of my favourite local producers, that I've played on my mr elephant radio show - Terrorbyte, Tom Excell, Automaton, Sam Redmore, Mylz Hedz and Redi Knights, Dj Feva, and a host of names that were new but have gone into my ever expanding virtual record box.
Without wishing to overstate anything, being a part of this compilation has helped me view my own music differently and gave me a confidence and something external and tangible to share. Just putting a few tracks online has already connected me with someone who wants to use my music for a software demo, a visual artist who wants to make some visual content, and some inspiring feedback from some esteemed peers, and its great to see their label go from strength to strength with the debut beta test release which is called Chemical Coercion and available as a limited edition 180g bass-heavy battlewax from 1st Feb 2014.
